baba, ending prayer and worshipping narmada by floating 'diya' in the holy water, to see whether his prayer is accepted?!
what narmada is to this baba,
claude renault is to me.
i do not have better words to say how much i love claude's photographs celebrating india's cultural diversity and her people. from his photographs and notes, i learn seeing people that i always missed before (there was a time when i actually avoided people in my frames!)
today, i have a new world of wonderful people, culture and history that is made visible and perceivable due to claude's work.
i would simply like to dedicate this series of 'living on the prayer' to claude renault who made me see what i saw; and amrutlal vegad, for inspiring me to travel to the places where narmada flows.

(sadhu)'baba' was all that everybody called him. this was the first glimpse of him, getting ready for the holy bath.
baba lives on the narmada bank, in small hut. as per daily routine, he bath, wash cloths and worship the holy narmada, everyday after sunrise and before sunset. then after he get lost in prayer and other religious rituals in his hut. if someone provide food he will eat, otherwise, fresh air smelling 'agarbatti' and 'diya' is enough for him. in the picture is 70% of the things (walking stick is submerged rightnow) he needs and possess, rest 30% is all that is required to worship god, in his dwelling.
i was about half an hour here, speechless, seeing the simplicity in self-sufficiency. all that i could say him was 'pranam'. and for the whole time a line came to my mind "happiness is in what you have, not in what you want."
